STL, 3MF, and OBJ: which 3D print file should you use?

STL remains widely used because it describes a printable surface mesh simply, but it does not preserve every design decision. Units, color, print settings, and editable history may need to travel separately. That makes a clear project note valuable when sharing an STL with a print service.

3MF can carry richer manufacturing context, including units and other production information supported by the workflow. OBJ is common where textures or visual assets matter, but it still needs careful export and interpretation for a physical print.

For a custom print, send the original design file when possible, the exported print file, reference dimensions, material intent, and photos or drawings of the desired result. The file is one part of the specification; the brief makes it usable.
