How to dry and store 3D printer filament

Filament storage is part of print quality. Some materials absorb moisture readily, and the symptoms can include popping, inconsistent extrusion, rough surfaces, or weaker-looking layers. Keep unused spools in sealed containers with desiccant, and return them there when a project is finished.

When a spool shows moisture symptoms, use a drying method that is appropriate for the material and follows the equipment or filament supplier’s instructions. Avoid guessing with high heat: an unsuitable temperature can deform a spool or damage the material before it ever reaches the printer.

Label storage with material, color, opening date, and any successful profile notes. This small habit turns a shelf of similar-looking spools into a dependable material library.
