How to design 3D printed threads, clips, and snap fits

Threads, clips, and snap fits concentrate force into small regions, so they should be designed around the material and print direction from the first sketch. A feature that looks correct on screen can crack along layer lines or bind after printing if its clearance and wall structure are untested.

Prototype the connection separately. Test a short thread, a single snap arm, or one clip opening in the final material, orientation, and layer height. Observe how it flexes, where it marks, and whether repeated use changes the fit.

Round internal corners where geometry allows, avoid abrupt thickness changes, and provide access for assembly. Design for replacement when the connection will be used often; a small removable clip is more practical than reprinting an entire larger object after fatigue.
