Overhangs and supports: how to design for cleaner 3D prints
By Let's 3D Studio · 1 min read

FDM prints are built one layer at a time, so unsupported faces can sag when each new line has too little material beneath it. Instead of assuming one universal overhang angle, test your printer, material, and cooling with an overhang model and use the result as a design reference.
Orient the part before slicing, then ask where the best visible surfaces will land and where supports will touch. A different orientation can reduce support, shorten the print, and move layer lines away from the direction of highest force.
When support is unavoidable, make it intentional. Include support-friendly contact areas, use chamfers or self-supporting shapes where possible, and allow enough access for removal and finishing tools.
